Jorge Calandrelli Master Class – Sep 21, 2002

21 September 2002

ASMAC held a Master Class for string writing at Valley College on September 21st, 2002 with Jorge Calandrelli. A selection of ten pieces were chosen from Jorge’s varied career as an arranger and composer.

Those selections presented were:
1. Falling In Love Again, an instrumental arrangement Jorge co-produced with Ettore Stratta.
2. Let’s Start Right Now, a vocal arrangement for Barbra Streisand.
3. The Separation, a composed music cue from the movie The Color Purple.
4. A Love Before Time, a composed theme from the movie Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon.
5. Summer, a jazz adaptation from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons for the Eddie Daniels CD, The Five Seasons. Jorge also wrote a Fifth Season for the CD.
6. Nature Boy, a vocal arrangement for Celine Dion.
7. Jo Jo’s Dance, a big band arrangement for Rob McConnell’s Boss Brass.
8. Oblivion, an instrumental arrangement for Ettore Stratta which won a posthumous Grammy for composer Astor Piazzolla.
9. Esta Tarde Vi Llover, a vocal arrangement for Cura.
10. Concerto for Jazz Clarinet and Orchestra, composed by Mr. Calandrelli and performed by Eddie Daniels.

Jorge then spoke on writing for string quartet. He encouraged everyone to study Ravel’s String Quartet In F.

Jorge has been very supportive and enthusiastic as he feels that this is a
wonderful opportunity to share his knowledge, background and experience
with younger colleagues. All were taken with his genuine, honest personality and his gorgeous music. Everyone left inspired to perfect their own talents. Thank You, Jorge!
