“Tracing the Origins of Jazz Standards”

This ASMAC Masterclass will entail a multi-media presentation investigating 4 well-known standard songs that have become jazz standards. Also, as a added feature, Kim will be offering different examples of voicing a large jazz ensemble, both brass and reed sections, and choosing different types of passing chords.

With the standards, we will see the origins of 4 chosen standard songs: in what style they were originally written and for what purpose. Then we will see who first recorded them as a JAZZ selection. And then what jazz styles they have been played in and how they are commonly played today.

Jazz saxophonist and composer KIM RICHMOND is based in Los Angeles and works as a freelance musician, doing studio work, shows, and various jazz  and classical venues. He works extensively as a doubling saxophonist (most often lead alto saxophone, doubling on flutes and clarinet). He is considered a jazz stylist and holds a position of high musical respect among his peers, both as a player and as a composer/arranger and leader. Kim has been a member of the orchestras of Stan Kenton (on the road and one album), Bob Florence (on 13 albums), Vinny Golia (2 albums), Clare Fischer (one album), Louis Bellson, Bill Holman, and many others.

Released in May 2013 is the Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra (a 23-piece showcase for Kim’s writing and soloing abilities) CD “Artistry” – a Tribute to Stan Kenton, which is getting much critical acclaim, and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Instrumental Arrangement (the arrangement of “Invitation”). The recording “Refractions,” also by his Concert Jazz Orchestra, was released in Summer 2003. This album rendered a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Composition (the composition “Precious Promises”). A later CD was recorded with his 6-piece Ensemble, featuring trumpeter John Daversa and trombonist Joey Sellers, “Live at Cafe Metropol.” His previous album is “CrossWeave,” co-led with trumpeter Clay Jenkins with a sextet featuring tenor saxophonist Rich Perry and pianist Harold Danko. Ballads (on Chase Music Group label), released Summer 2001, is a collection of Kim’s favorite standards in a jazz setting featuring his own solo alto and soprano saxophone styles. Other recordings are “Looking In Looking Out,” “Passages” by the Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra and two more recordings co-led with trumpeter and tour partner Clay Jenkins: “Range” and “Look At The Time.”

In spite of his busy schedule in the professional music world, Kim enjoys keeping in touch with the educational music field by serving as guest lecturer, conductor and soloist (his primary jazz voice is on alto saxophone) at college music festivals and workshops around the country, often touring several times a year. Kim served on the jazz faculty at the University of Southern California (USC) for 12 years where he taught ensembles, composition and saxophone. He more recently taught at California Institute of the Arts and Cal State Fullerton. He is a Selmer and Vandoren artist and a clinician/artist-in-residence at the Jim Widner Summer Jazz Camps at the University of Missouri, St. Louis, and the University of Nebraska, Omaha. For many years he was a member of the faculty of the Centrum Summer Jazz Camp in Port Townsend, Washington. In Los Angeles, he was Music Director and conductor for the Los Angeles Music Center’s Spotlight Awards (spotlighting Southern California’s top student talent), held every April.

Kim is also the current President of ASMAC, having served on the board for many years.

DUANE L. TATRO has composed extensively for television and film as well as writing live concert media works for orchestra, wind ensemble, chamber ensembles, and electronic instruments. In his early career, he worked professionally as an instrumentalist; playing clarinet, saxophone and bassoon.

His film and television credits include: Hotel, Dynasty, Loveboat, Matt Houston, Glitter, Hawaii Five-O, Barnaby Jones, Tales of the Unexpected, Most Wanted, Super Star, Manhunter, Cannon, Streets of San Francisco, Cades County, M.A.S.H., Mission Impossible, Mannix, Australia, A Timeless Land, and many Movies of the Week.

Mr. Tatro has composed many concert works, and participated in Meet the Composer programs at both San Diego and New Mexico State Universities, where he lectured on 20th Century music and composing for films.
