ASMAC is proud to present the winners of the 2017 ASMAC/Bill Conti Big Band Arranging & Composing Competition.  The goal of the competition is the shine a light on the most talented emerging composers and arrangers of large ensemble jazz music and to welcome them into our illustrious community of music creators.  The young writers who submitted their carefully composed and arranged pieces are some of the best and brightest that ASMAC has had the pleasure of becoming aquatinted.

On July 5th Kim Richmond’s Concert Jazz Orchestra will present a live reading session of the winning entries.  All three of the pieces offer a fresh viewpoint into the art of composing for big band.  The Grammy-Nominated ensemble will rehearse each piece in front of an audience, accompanied by constructive critiques from both Kim Richmond and members of his ensemble.  This will be both a fun and illuminating evening and is not to be missed.

ASMAC thanks Mr. Bill Conti for sponsoring this annual competition.

The submissions for the 2017 ASMAC/Bill Conti Big Band Arranging & Composing Competition were judged and evaluated by our illustrious panel of Kim Richmond, Patrick Williams, and Scott Healy.

We are proud to honor the winners of this year’s competition:

1st place: Neil Carson, “Ballad for the Hopeless Romantic”
2nd place: Juan Carlos Mata-Alvarez, “Since You Went Away”
3rd place: Mina Choi, “Paddle Through the Lake”
