NACUSA-LA becomes ASMAC Concert Music Committee
STUDIO CITY, CA — The Board of the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Association of Composers, USA (NACUSA-LA) voted unanimously on 8 March 2026 to dissolve the chapter and reconstitute as the Concert Music Committee of the American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers (ASMAC).
Founded in the early 1950s, NACUSA-LA spent seven decades advocating for contemporary composers, presenting three to five concerts per year throughout its history. Its membership has included university and independent composers and performers specializing in contemporary music.
Dr. Deon Nielsen Price, former President of both the National and Los Angeles Chapter organizations and a NACUSA member since the 1970s, reflected on the transition:
This marks the end of an era for the Los Angeles Chapter of NACUSA, but also an expansion of our efforts to promote new music — by joining forces with ASMAC, a larger organization with international membership.
Gayle Levant, President of ASMAC, welcomed the merger:
We are delighted to welcome the composers and performers of the LA Chapter of NACUSA into ASMAC. Looking to the future, we will continue to present opportunities for composers to hear their music performed with live musicians to increase and expand public awareness of the art of composition and arranging.
The first concert under the ASMAC umbrella will be a “Piano Splash” event in the summer of 2026. A score call will be issued in April and will be open to all ASMAC members and former NACUSA-LA members.
The final concerts under the NACUSA-LA banner will be the Music for Unity concerts in collaboration with the All-ASA (All Armenian Student Association) on 15 May 2026 and 16 May 2026, the results of the 2026 International Composition Competition, at Glendale Presbyterian Church, 125 S. Louise Street, Glendale, CA USA. RSVP at the Music for Unity website.
