Elaine Gould is a leading authority in the field of contemporary music editing. In 1987 she was appointed New Music Editor at Faber Music, a publisher which has always had the highest reputation for its contemporary music. Elaine has edited the music of all its house composers, working on the complex and varied scores of Thomas Adès, George Benjamin, Jonathan Harvey and Oliver Knussen amongst others.

It was Elaine’s strong desire to raise standards of notation and presentation in the industry (amongst its copyists and typesetters as well as its composers) that was the driving force for writing a new reference book. Published in 2011, Behind Bars: The Definitive Guide to Music Notation received considerable critical acclaim from the musical press and academics alike, and has sold over 12,500 copies worldwide.

Elaine is passionate about raising standards of editing and notation through education. She regularly delivers lectures and composition seminars to university music departments and music colleges. She gave a series of university lectures in Germany in 2018-19 to launch the German-language edition, Hals über Kopf, which was published in 2014. She has taught a notation course at the University of Birmingham, UK and also runs a post-graduate course for editors entering the music industry in London.

Elaine studied music at the University of Birmingham, England, becoming a freelance copyist in 1980. She worked for several leading UK music publishers, before joining Faber Music.
