Discussion and analysis of historic big band recordings from the 1920s to the 1960s which will include a few little-known Duke Ellington items. There will also be some examples of arrangers borrowing from each other along with innovative charts written for Jimmie Lunceford, Bernie Goodman, Ray McKinley, Dizzy Gillespie, Todd Dameron, etc. For additional score study, we will explore Lewis Porter’s own ‘Oliver, a tribute to Messiaen’.
