Jon Burlingame shares stories about his research on Henry Mancini for his latest book Dreamsville: Henry Mancini, Peter Gunn, and Music for TV Noir.
Today, the name of Henry Mancini is known the world over. But in 1958, he was unknown, toiling in mostly B movies at Universal. The TV series Peter Gunn changed all that practically overnight. By early 1959, its cool-jazz soundtrack was no. 1 on the charts, winning the first Grammy ever awarded for Album of the Year.
Jon Burlingame’s new book Dreamsville chronicles the early TV career of Mancini, including both Peter Gunn and Mr. Lucky, and tells how those shows launched his long professional relationship with filmmaker Blake Edwards and a legendary run of Oscar and Grammy wins, becoming the first film composer to become a household name in America.
