24-time Academy Award nominee and three-time winner Max Steiner is widely recognized as the first composer of the sound film era to establish the language and grammar of film scoring. But until recently, Steiner’s colorful, adventurous life has mostly been an untold story.
Steven C. Smith hosts a celebration of Steiner’s remarkable life and career, which included scoring such classics as Casablanca, King Kong, Gone with the Wind, Now, Voyager, The Big Sleep, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and over 200 other titles.
Steven, author of the new book Music by Max Steiner: The Epic Life of Hollywood’s Most Influential Composer, will explore Steiner’s approach to composing and orchestration; share newly unearthed stories about his work with David O. Selznick, Frank Sinatra, Bette Davis, and others; and discuss Steiner’s pioneering work with special guests that include composer Conrad Pope, Peabody-winning author Gary Giddins, and composers John Morgan and William T. Stromberg, who have spent decades reconstructing and re-recording Steiner’s music.
