“Old Hat/New Hat”
Eclectic Big Band Influences

Frank Perowsky

Hosted by
Russ Anixter & Steven Bernstein

A fascinating exploration of
contemporary non-traditional big band arranging.

Our last episode of Old Hat/New Hat looked at arranging for eclectic ensembles. In this episode, our main focus will be influences and arranging through the experiences of a veteran of the NYC jazz scene.
Hosted by Russ Anixter, founder of Russ Anixter’s Hippie Big Band, with co-host Steven Bernstein: Trumpet Player/Slide Trumpet Player/Bandleader/Arranger (Millennial Territory Orchestra, Sex Mob, Spanish Fly, Henry Butler, and the Hot Nine).
Steven will talk about his current Millennial Territory Orchestra release “Good Time Music”, and we’ll examine one of his arrangements.
Featured guest will be Frank Perowsky, who since graduating from Juilliard in 1958 has been a mainstay in the NYC jazz and commercial music scene as a woodwind player, arranger, and composer. We’ll get into his composition studies with Henry Brant, and his playing and arranging for many New York big bands including Bill Watrous’ Manhattan Wildlife Refuge and Johnny Richards. We will look at an arrangement of Richards’, as well as some big band pieces by Frank.
