Symphonic Grateful Dead
with Giancarlo Aquilanti and Paul Phillips.
Moderated by Russ Anixter.
The last several years Bob Weir from the Grateful Dead has been giving performances with his current band, The Wolf Bros, and symphony orchestras including the National Symphony Orchestra and the Stanford Symphony. Russ Anixter will be speaking with the arranger and orchestrator Giancarlo Aquilanti, and conductor Paul Phillips.
We talk about how the project came together, rehearsal procedures and issues, Giancarlo’s approach and methods, ideas and techniques of integrating a rock band with a symphony orchestra, and constructing an overture. We look and listen to three of Giancarlo’s scores, and one of Russ’ scores of a Grateful Dead song arranged for his 11-piece band’s upcoming CD to see how wonderfully pliable the songs of the Grateful Dead can be.
