Robert Russell Bennett was the first president of ASMAC and is best known for his arrangement and orchestration of many well-known Broadway and Hollywood musicals by other composers such as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, and Richard Rodgers. Bennett’s musical works include Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!, South Pacific, The King and I, Flower Drum Song and The Sound of Music. Other Broadway landmarks over the years include Show Boat, Annie Get Your Gun, Cole Porter’s Kiss Me Kate, as well as Lerner and Loewe’s My Fair Lady and Camelot. Other notable work includes major contributions for the television series Victory at Sea. Bennett was given a Special Tony Award in 1957 and again in 2008, an Oscar for the film Oklahoma! and in 1963 an Emmy Award for NBC’s Project 20. Bennett also composed over 80 concert works and is the author of the book Instrumentally Speaking.
